Comparisons between the Nokia Lumia 900 and the as-yet unannounced iPhone5 have of course been ten a penny, ever since the release date of the Windows Phone powerhouse finally arrived.
However, when holding the Lumia 900 against a device rather closer to home ? the Lumia 800 ? we can take build a much clearer picture of exactly what Nokia was aiming for, and indeed whether they succeeded.
As we all know, the Lumia 800 is a striking and impressive device that could not have been better-built for Windows Phone 7 ? experts have long agreed it is a crime that the 800 is not doing better the world over.
In fact, Microsoft?s mobile OS market share on a global basis is now below 2% ? dangerous territory to say the least.
So, all hopes are on the Nokia Lumia 900 to fly the flag in style, which at first glance comes across as slightly larger though otherwise identical looking Lumia 800 clone. The large 4.3 inch screen and additional forward camera sensor are of course welcome.
First thought are therefore whether or not all the fuss was really worth it for a bigger screen and an admittedly non-essential camera, or whether the 800 was already about as good as it was going to get?
Curiously, while most rival Android developers have been focusing huge efforts on massive quad-core processor upgrades for their recent releases, Nokia has kept the same dual-core chip in the Lumia 900. Also, the 16GB storage cannot be upgraded or added to, though a further 25GB is available online.
Of course, one of the biggest question marks of all remains above the Windows Phone OS, which although offers an incredible overall experience is still considerably behind iOS and Android ? probably due to familiarity if nothing else. What?s more, apps are relatively sparse by comparison and look just as good on the smaller screen of the Lumia 800.
All in all, the Nokia Lumia 900 is nothing more and nothing less than a vitamin-enriched full-fat version of the Lumia 800, which is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
However, given the fact that both Windows Phone and Nokia are struggling to stay afloat as it is, something revolutionary or downright miraculous was really called for and the Lumia 900 sadly is neither.
