Baby totes of the future are sling-stroller hybrids

6 hrs.

Toting infants and toddlers can be a hassle, especially when navigating stairs and crumbling sidewalks with the kangaroo-pouch-on-wheels known as the stroller.?

Thankfully, some parents of today and tomorrow who are taking classes between diaper changes and temper tantrums have come up with a solution: a sling-stroller hybrid that makes getting around a snap.

Together, a group of students from?MIT and the Rhode Island School of Design developed a?system that?is more sling than stroller. It looks similar to other infant carriers such as the Baby Bjorn and Ergobaby that parents wear on their chests, though with the ability to shift the precious package to one hip or the other while the free hand hoists the stroller for a jaunt up stairs or a across a busy street.

But, unlike other slings, the BuzzyBaby comes with a harness system that buckles onto the stroller to safely roll along the kiddo, giving the totee?s back and arms a rest until the next flight of stairs.

?The harness acts much like a universal remote control, providing one device to connect several,? notes The Boston Globe.?

The team came up with the idea after watching video tape of one of their members, Kin Lo, a fellow at the MIT?s Sloan School of Management, trying to navigate the stairs of a New York City subway with a stroller.?

According to market research performed by the?team, which included additional members from MIT and the Rhode Island School of Design, 77 percent of 400 mothers surveyed would find the system useful.

Apparently, this feedback is encouraging enough to turn the idea dreamed up in class into a business. The team plans to start selling their BuzzyBaby contraption in spring 2013.

Harold Berman's Revolution in Western Legal Thought, Part I ...

In a series of posts, I will discuss the great enterprise of the late professor Harold Berman. ?That enterprise was nothing less than to relate fundamental developments in Christianity and other core beliefs to fundamental developments in law. In this post I will introduce Berman and his project. ??In the second, I will summarize some of the most important themes of his books. In the third and fourth, I will offer my own views on some of the implications of his narrative for liberty.

?? Harold Berman was a professor of law for approximately sixty years, first at Harvard, then at Emory. When I was a student at Harvard, he was known around campus mostly as a specialist in Soviet law?a legal system now happily defunct. ?Nevertheless his work on the history of the West reflects his experience of Soviet law in two important ways.? First, Soviet law reflected an ideology and Berman sought to show that law throughout history was not simply functional but always reflected far-reaching worldviews. ?Second, Berman thought the Western tradition was worth defending?both against the external threat of communism and the internal threat of nihilism, which Berman saw represented in law by the Critical Legal Studies Movement growing up around him at Harvard.

The canvass on which he labored was enormous. ?His first book Law and Revolution: The Formation of the Western Legal Tradition wound a course through the German folk traditions to the papal investiture controversy under Pope Gregory VII to Henry II?s confrontation with Thomas A Becket. ?His second book, Law and Revolution II: The Impact of the Protestant Reformation on the Western Legal Tradition considered how the reformation theology of Luther and Calvin transformed law in both Germany and England. He was at work on a third volume that would have extended his history of law?s development through the French Revolution.

No sketch of Harold Berman can be complete without a reference to an epigram in which he summarized children?s natural grasp of natural law: ??A child says, ?It?s my toy.? That?s property law,? he said. ?A child says, ?You promised me.? That?s contract law. A child says, ?He hit me first.? That?s criminal law. A child says, ?Daddy said I could.? That?s constitutional law.?

Tesla shows us how a Model S is made, tailors EVs to your exact liking online (video)

Image

Tesla is just three weeks away from delivering the Model S, but that hasn't stopped it from getting more in-depth with the construction of its first four-door EV. The automaker's first peek behind the scenes shows us just how quickly it can make the aluminum body parts that make the electric sedan: a single part can be stamped out in just six seconds. If you'd rather get to ordering a Model S than watching it built, though, Tesla is about to kick off Design Studio, a new way to customize the company's EVs for orders. Build-and-price sites aren't anything new, although Tesla will be rare in eventually letting you pull the trigger online instead of having to plead with a dealer to place an order. Design Studio goes up this week, with full sales in a few months; new details of the Model S production process will go live every Tuesday if you need a steady intravenous drip of Tesla news.

Organic Pest Control for NJ Homeowners - IdeaMarketers.com

There are few things more annoying than being plagued with pests and unwanted insects. Now, thanks to organic pest control. NJ homeowners have the option to get rid of ants, cockroaches, wasps, mice, squirrels and other unwanted and destructive pests. While a few of these methods can be implemented by any homeowner, others require a professional organic pest control NJ company. In case green pest control NJ companies aren't on your radar, here are a few ways they can treat your property and home to ensure a pest-free summer.

Botanical and Essential Oils

Most exterminators use synthetic and chemical insecticides, poisons and pesticides. That may be the traditional route, but you should know that nature has provided many substances that are not harmful to humans or pets. Green pest control NJ companies use treatments made with botanical ingredients and essential oils. Although that may sound more like a recipe for a massage than a strategy for getting rid of unwanted insects and animals, they have a proven record of repelling pests like carpenter ants, wasps, bees, squirrels, cave crickets and ticks. By signing up for a regular program of organic pest control, NJ property owners can enjoy a summer without being concerned about ticks, wasps and other dangerous and destructive pests.

Traps and Removal

When it comes to green pest control, NJ experts understand that removing an animal or insect nest is usually a preferable alternative to killing the animals. New Jersey organic companies will use the more humane option of trapping and removing squirrels, raccoons and other large rodents and relocating them to a safe area located far away. They can also neutralize wasps, bees and other stinging insects and relocate their nests to an area where they are not dangerous to you and your family.

Prevention

When it comes to potential pest problems, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Part of any good program is preventing re-infestation. A good NJ pest control company will determine how pests are getting into your home and onto your property and block their access routes. Organic pest control NJ experts will advise you on such matters as trimming overhanging branches, screening openings and holes that allow insects and small rodents to enter, and ways to store food and garbage so that it's not attractive to pests.

New Jersey Insects

New Jersey is the Garden State, and thus home to thousands of species of insects. Yet, only a few of them commonly rise to the level of "pest." The most common are cockroaches, ants, carpenter ants, wasps, yellow jackets, centipedes, cave crickets, ticks and bed bugs. Some of these are dangerous - cockroaches carry disease and contribute to allergies and asthma, for example - while others, such as centipedes and cave crickets, are merely nuisances. All can be controlled by organic pest control methods.

Green Pest Control

Whether you live in the suburbs, the city or a rural area, your home is subject to invasion by wild animals, including skunks, squirrels, pigeons, raccoons and groundhogs. In addition to spreading disease, these animals can play havoc with your vegetable garden, destroy your lawn and damage your home or property in other ways. Organic companies can trap and relocate most animal pests.

Why subject your family to noxious chemicals and damaging neurotoxins when you can hire an organic company to get rid of your pests permanently - without dangerous poisons?

Wireless startup LightSquared files for bankruptcy | Indonesia

LightSquared Inc., which hoped to create an independent wireless broadband network in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday.

Regulators blocked its plan this winter because of concerns that its transmissions would interfere with GPS navigation.

LightSquared hasn?t given up. Chief Financial Officer Marc Montagner said in a statement that the bankruptcy filing is intended to gain the company ?breathing room? while it continues to work through its regulatory issues.

It has said that it has invested more than $4 billion in the network. LightSquared listed assets and liabilities of more than $1 billion each in the filing Monday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The company, which is based in Reston, Virginia, is owned by Harbinger Capital Partners, a private-equity firm that made billions betting against subprime mortgages ahead of the collapse of the housing market.

Harbinger bought SkyTerra, a provider of satellite communications services to businesses, in 2010. It then lobbied the Federal Communications Commission to allow it to use the spectrum set aside for SkyTerra for ground-based communications ? essentially, a conventional wireless broadband network, rather than a satellite-based one.

But SkyTerra?s licenses were for spectrum adjacent to a band used by GPS satellites. On the ground, GPS units had no problem filtering out transmissions from SkyTerra?s satellites, but regulators determined that they could be disrupted by strong, ground-based signals.

LightSquared?s CEO, telecom veteran Sanjiv Ahuja, resigned in February.

The company?s largest creditors are Boeing Satellite Systems Inc., owed $7.5 million, and telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent, owed $7.3 million, according to the filing.

Recruiting Professionals into your Network Marketing Business | Jay ...

Monday, May 28th, 2012 at 11:12 am ?

Recruiting Professionals into your Network Marketing BusinessRecruiting professional network marketers is a sound approach for getting fast results in the home business industry. Yet, this strategy almost requires you to be successful before you start ? to attract talent, you must be talented.

Many amateurs in the home business industry are taught the three-foot rule that involves prospecting all your friends and family, people working at the local garage, postmen, supermarket check-out girls. Honestly, can you see the flaw in that?

It?s no secret that everyday people from any walk of life and any educational background do achieve success in network marketing. We see the stories all over ? but it?s not typical of 95% of the people who get started. Those who succeed always have either a large network or total grit in terms of their level of desire; they are prepared to roll up their sleeves and take massive action.

However, recruiting upwards in the social economic market means you cut out the large proportion who will never do what it takes. You have better quality conversations. As business associates, these professional people will equally be well positioned to take the same strategy and start recruiting professionals in network marketing for their own business, earning you some sure residuals.

Successfully recruiting professionals in network marketing means you must yourself be both professional and credible. It follows then that in order to be successful in network marketing you must absolutely master your posture. You must come to the game with a strong mental attitude that comes from a clear awareness of who you are, what you do and why you do it.

Here?s three key principles to mastering mental toughness for recruiting professionals in network marketing.

#1.? Work as hard on yourself as you do on your business.

This is a key priority, since evidence shows that success doesn?t just happen because you want it.

As the old adage goes: ?When the Why is strong, the How becomes easy.? Mindset before skillset, but most people only work on their skills.

Success in any business, and undoubtedly this is particularly so in network marketing business, is a direct result of your ability to master your personal hang ups.

Many of us come to the home business industry because we are not having success in our life, sometimes we feel we have failed in our chosen careers, even if it?s a lot to do with downturns in the economy. We start in a position of financial worry rather than investment (like traditional businesses).

As Socrates postulates: If a man would move the world, he first must move himself.?

#2. Think positive ? always.

Thinking positive is not rocket science, but it?s not simple either.

You must first learn to create a strong sense of purpose behind what you are doing, and then act upon your belief that success can happen for you and those you seek to inspire and support.

First you must develop true personal awareness ? what are your strengths, weaknesses? What kinds of limiting beliefs do you carry around with you? And then work on overcoming these.

There are so many techniques around these days, it can be hard to know where to start. Books, audios, events abound.

So you need to work through systematically, to understand your point of departure, to write things down, to reflect ? this takes time and commitment but will move your farther than you can imagine.

#3. Learn to dream big again.

Sometimes, we grow out the big hopes and aspirations we had for ourselves when we were children. If you were the author of your own story ? where would you begin?

Visualisation is a powerful link between your goal and your reality and helps you to focus, commit to your goals and take action working towards them every day.

Personal accountability and daily disciplines is not easy and many of us need guidance and support to develop these.

The moment you accept responsibility for your thoughts and actions, you build a strong consciousness that moves you towards your goals.

?

If you want to change your reality, learning some of these powerful techniques requires an interactive personal development program. Take a look at Elevate, a 72-day interactive home study course ? and see if this can add value to what you?re currently doing.?

Kahne keeps Hendrick success rolling at Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) ? Welcome to the Hendrick family, Kasey Kahne.

Kahne pulled away to victory in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, winning NASCAR's longest race for the third time and gaining his stripes for Hendrick Motorsports the only way that matters ? taking the checkered flag.

Kahne wondered earlier this year when that might happen.

The self-imposed pressure grew this week before Charlotte Motor Speedway at a party Hendrick threw to celebrate the owner's 200th career win Jimmie Johnson earned at Darlington Raceway two weeks back. Kahne was introduced as part of the current team ? after the 15 drivers who won races for Hendrick took a bow. Kahne said the gathering showed him what Hendrick has meant to the sport ? and how much he wanted to add to that legacy.

"It's something I've been looking forward to for a long time," Kahne said.

And it was a popular triumph. Teammate Jeff Gordon rushed up to hug Kahne and told him, "Proud of you."

Hendrick saw that Kahne and crew chief Kenny Francis were frustrated by their early struggles when their best finish was a 14th in California.

"You could see it was bothering him," Hendrick said. "I tried to reassure him that we're in this for the long haul."

Things began to click soon after, and Kahne entered the week with five straight top-10 finishes.

What a roll for Hendrick Motorsports. The program was stuck on 199 victories since October. Then came Johnson's milestone win at Darlington. The five-time champion followed that with a victory in the All-Star race at Charlotte last week.

Kahne led four Hendrick cars in the top 11. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sixth and Gordon was right behind in seventh ? only his third top 10 finish of the year. Johnson came in 11th. He was vying for more but fell from contention with a mistake on the final pit stop as he left the stall with his gas can still engaged, dragging crew member Brandon Harder behind him.

Harder was not hurt in the tumble. Johnson was docked with a stop-and-go penalty that ended his chances at winning a third straight week.

"I think we're showing the consistency from all of our teams," Hendrick said. "I can't wait for the second half of the season."

Kahne crossed the finish line nearly 5 seconds ahead of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Busch was third and series points leader Greg Biffle fourth.

It was Kahne's 13th career win and first since last November in Phoenix.

Kahne's a racing gym rat who can't stay away from competition. He drives in NASCAR Truck races when the Sprint Cup series is off ? as he did at Darlington in 2011 and Rockinigham this spring ? and raced this weekend in the World of Outlaws dirt track contest across the street from Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kahne led 96 laps, including the final 42. He doesn't see why the winning can't continue.

"I just know that the cars and the people we have that Mr. Hendrick gives us is everything that we need to win," Kahne said.

Danica Patrick, the first woman to drive in the race since Janet Guthrie in 1976, was five laps down in 30th ? her best finish in three career Sprint Cup races.

Car owner Chip Ganassi flew to Charlotte after celebrating Dario Franchitti's win at the Indianapolis 500 earlier Sunday. Ganassi, part of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, had hoped to double up with drivers Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya. But 250 laps in, McMurray was a lap down and Montoya two behind after needing an extra pit stop to tighten a loose wheel.

"The minute I walked into the garage, people were high-fiving me," Ganassi said. "Right now, we've got to get our cars up the grid."

It didn't happen as Montoya finished two laps down in 20th and McMurray right behind in 21st.

For much of this race, it looked as if Biffle wouldn't be caught. He led 204 laps to dominate early and was clearly best as the race began in the hot, bright sunshine. Once the night cooled off the track, Biffle was no match for Kahne.

"Kasey's car was just better at night," Biffle said.

An early crash took Patrick out of contention in the season-opening Daytona 500 and she finished 38th. Patrick returned to Sprint Cup two weeks ago at treacherous Darlington and lasted throughout at the track considered "Too Tough to Tame" and crossed the line in 31st.

Patrick's goals this week were simply to be running at the end ? and that she was. Starting 40th after a poor qualifying effort, Patrick quickly fell top laps down. But she held on throughout the long, long night.

Patrick also kept her humor. When she was cautioned by her team to keep hydrating, Patrick cracked, "Copy that. Every time you don't get an answer to a question, that's what I'm doing."

Patrick's next Sprint Cup race will be at Bristol on Aug. 25. She promised to be more aggressive upon her return.

"Now that I'm getting more comfortable in certain situations, it's time to start testing those waters and freeing the car up a little bit and seeing what we can get out of it," Patrick said.

Earnhardt had hoped to avenge last year's heartbreaking loss when he ran out of fuel 700 feet from the finish line while leading. Earnhardt came as close to second and was drag-racing Hamlin for the lead on the final restart before as the large crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway howled. Earnhardt, too, couldn't keep up with his teammate and his winless drought grew to 141 races.

NASCAR's king, career victory leader Richard Petty, had both his entries starting 1-2. But polesitter Aric Almirola quickly fell back and finished 16th. Marcos Ambrose, who started second, broke a wheel hub and ended up 32nd.

The race was the quickest ever for the 600 at 3 hours, 51 minutes, 14 seconds, nearly 5 minurtes faster than the mark set in 1995.

Nokia Lumia 900 vs Lumia 800 - World News Resource

Nokia Lumia 900 vs Lumia 800 ? Is the Bigger Deal Such a Big Deal?Comparisons between the Nokia Lumia 900 and the as-yet unannounced iPhone5 have of course been ten a penny, ever since the release date of the Windows Phone powerhouse finally arrived.

However, when holding the Lumia 900 against a device rather closer to home ? the Lumia 800 ? we can take build a much clearer picture of exactly what Nokia was aiming for, and indeed whether they succeeded.

As we all know, the Lumia 800 is a striking and impressive device that could not have been better-built for Windows Phone 7 ? experts have long agreed it is a crime that the 800 is not doing better the world over.

In fact, Microsoft?s mobile OS market share on a global basis is now below 2% ? dangerous territory to say the least.

So, all hopes are on the Nokia Lumia 900 to fly the flag in style, which at first glance comes across as slightly larger though otherwise identical looking Lumia 800 clone. The large 4.3 inch screen and additional forward camera sensor are of course welcome.

First thought are therefore whether or not all the fuss was really worth it for a bigger screen and an admittedly non-essential camera, or whether the 800 was already about as good as it was going to get?

Curiously, while most rival Android developers have been focusing huge efforts on massive quad-core processor upgrades for their recent releases, Nokia has kept the same dual-core chip in the Lumia 900. Also, the 16GB storage cannot be upgraded or added to, though a further 25GB is available online.

Of course, one of the biggest question marks of all remains above the Windows Phone OS, which although offers an incredible overall experience is still considerably behind iOS and Android ? probably due to familiarity if nothing else. What?s more, apps are relatively sparse by comparison and look just as good on the smaller screen of the Lumia 800.

All in all, the Nokia Lumia 900 is nothing more and nothing less than a vitamin-enriched full-fat version of the Lumia 800, which is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

However, given the fact that both Windows Phone and Nokia are struggling to stay afloat as it is, something revolutionary or downright miraculous was really called for and the Lumia 900 sadly is neither.

NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships: Div. 1 at a glance

On one hand, the four teams taking the field tomorrow at Gillette Stadium perhaps are further proof that parity finally has arrived in Division 1 men?s lacrosse. For the first time since 1975 ? coincidentally, when Maryland last won it all ? the semifinals will not include Syracuse, Johns Hopkins or Virginia, and the remaining field has only one championship in that same time span (Duke in 2010). However, Duke has made it to Championship Weekend for the sixth straight season, Maryland was in the title game a year ago, and Notre Dame lost to Duke in that 2010 overtime thriller. Only Loyola, which last made the Final Four in 1998, can be considered a true ?party crasher.? Nonetheless, Loyola and Notre Dame will try to become only the ninth different school all-time to win an NCAA title.

Here is a look and the key pieces and storylines for each team, and what they will need to do to avoid being home for the Memorial Day barbecues:

No. 1 LOYOLA vs. No. 4 NOTRE DAME

TIME: Tomorrow, 2:30 p.m.

CHANNEL: ESPN2

THE ROAD TO FOXBORO: Unranked to start the season, the Greyhounds rose to No. 1 in the country in the polls before suffering their lone loss to Johns Hopkins. Still, they earned the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament and parlayed that into an eventual opening-round rout of Canisius in a game they led only 4-3 at the half. Then came the third meeting this season with Denver, and sparked by senior Eric Lusby?s five goals and two assists, the Greyhounds held off a furious comeback by the Pioneers to end their 14-year semifinal drought.

STUD: Mike Sawyer ? One of two Tewaaraton Award finalists who will be playing this weekend, the junior attackman (51-8-59) is second in the nation in goals and set the single-season school record with his one tally in the quarterfinal win against Denver. Sawyer is a two-time all-ECAC selection and spearheads a Greyhounds offense that ranks fourth in the nation in scoring (12.48 goals per game).

PLAYER YOU WILL KNOW BY MONDAY: Scott Ratliff ? The junior does things you would expect from a long-stick midfielder, leading the team in ground balls (79) and caused turnovers (34). But he also is a key part of a diverse Greyhounds offense with 12 goals (fifth on the team) and seven assists. A Tewaaraton nominee, Ratliff scored the winning goal in overtime to beat Denver in the ECAC semifinals and was named tournament MVP in the process. He is second in the nation in scoring among long-pole players.

WELCOME HOME: All-ECAC junior Davis Butts, a 2009 All-Scholastic at Walpole, starts in the midfield and is fourth in scoring (19-13-32) and tied for fifth in ground balls (38); sophomore D Pete Bowes also hails from Walpole, while junior Josh Hawkins (5-2-7) of Amherst is a solid short-stick defensive midfielder who missed the first four games with a back injury.

COACH?S CORNER: Charley Toomey ? In his seventh season at the helm of the Greyhounds, Toomey has a 61-37 career record and this season was named ECAC Coach of the Year for the third time. Toomey was the goalkeeper in 1990 when the Greyhounds made one of their two previous appearances in the national semifinals.

CHAMPIONSHIP OR BUST: In a classic battle of top offense vs. top defense, the Greyhounds will rely on Ratliff, Hawkins and sophomore Pat Laconi to get the transition game going and prevent Notre Dame?s defense from setting up. Once settled, the left-handed Lusby (45-16-61) will team with Sawyer, Butts and sophomore Justin Ward (team-high 30 assists) as they look to move the ball quickly against the Irish?s close defense and test Notre Dame?s outstanding goalie John Kemp. The Greyhounds could use another monster game from senior J.P. Dalton, who won 17-of-22 faceoffs in the quarterfinals.

THE ROAD TO FOXBORO: The Fighting Irish were poised to be the No. 1 seed in the NCAAs before being stunned by St. John?s in the semifinals of the inaugural Big East tournament. But they shook that off with one of their most decisive wins of the season against Yale in the opening round, getting 12 saves from John Kemp as well as three goals and two assists from sophomore Jim Marlatt. The Irish then broke open an 8-8 game with four straight goals in the fourth quarter to oust defending champion Virginia, as Kemp made 14 saves and Max Pfeifer scored three goals.

STUD: John Kemp ? A starter each of the last two seasons, Kemp has consistently established himself among the nation?s top goalkeepers. Now a junior and a Tewaaraton nominee, Kemp?s 6.22 GAA and .636 save percentage are the best in the nation. Only once this season has Kemp allowed double-digits in goals, with Virginia cracking the mark on a pair of desperation tallies in the final two minutes last Sunday. He is the third straight All-America goalie for the Irish, earning honorable mention in 2011.

PLAYER YOU WILL KNOW BY MONDAY: Kevin Randall ? Kemp?s job is made easier by having great defensive play in front of him, and Randall is the best of that bunch. The senior was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and has teamed with junior Matt Miller and sophomore Stephen O?Hara to help hold five opponents to five or fewer goals so far in 2012. Look for him to be matched against either Sawyer or Lusby.

WELCOME HOME: Junior Quinn Cully, a 2009 All-Scholastic who helped Duxbury to four straight state titles, plays in the defensive midfield and scored his lone career goal against Penn State; assistant coach Gerry Byrne played at UMass (1986) and coordinates the nation?s stingiest defense (6.27 GAA).

COACH?S CORNER: Kevin Corrigan ? In his 24th season in South Bend, the second-longest active tenure in Division 1, Corrigan has a 230-108 career record with ND (240-123 in 26 seasons overall) and has led the Irish to seven straight NCAA appearances (17 overall). He is a six-time league coach of the year honoree, including his first in the Big East in 2012.

CHAMPIONSHIP OR BUST: With four of the top 16 defensive teams in the nation here, there is no team better at 6-on-6 play than the Fighting Irish. Having Kemp as the last line of defense is a big advantage, and ND also has the midfield depth to wear teams down. While the balanced offense has clicked in the last two games, Marlatt is the top scorer with only 30 points, so ND probably doesn?t want to get into a shootout with the potent Greyhounds. One thing to watch: The Irish draw few penalties and have the nation?s best man-down defense (30-of-34), but need to be wary of a Loyola extra-man unit that is fifth in the nation (24-of-50, .480).

No. 3 DUKE vs. MARYLAND

TIME: Tomorrow, 5 p.m.

CHANNEL: ESPN2

THE ROAD TO FOXBORO: The Blue Devils stumbled a bit to a 3-3 start that included road losses to each of the other Final Four teams, then became one of the hottest teams in the nation in winning 12 of their last 13. Seniors Justin Turri, Robert Rotanz and sophomore Christian Walsh each scored three times in the opening-round win against Syracuse, and the Blue Devils used a 13-goal burst to overcome a 4-2 first-quarter deficit in an eventual blowout of Colgate in last Sunday?s quarterfinal.

STUD: C.J. Costabile ? The lasting memory is of the long-stick midfielder cleanly winning a faceoff and dashing in for the quick overtime goal that gave Duke its national championship win against Notre Dame two years ago. But the senior from New Fairfield, Conn., and Tewaaraton finalist does much more for Duke. He is one of the best in the nation in ground balls (136), winning 15 against Colgate, and his move to the faceoff ?X? (winning 14-of-20) completely turned the momentum in Duke?s favor. Costabile also is a regular member of the Devils defense and a trigger of the transition offense.

PLAYER YOU WILL KNOW BY MONDAY: Robert Rotanz ? The midfielder from Westport, Conn., has broken out during his senior season, and particularly during the tournament. Following up his three-goal effort against Syracuse, Rotanz had a career-best five goals and an assist against Colgate, giving him 38-8-46 totals this season. Rotanz teams with Turri and junior Jake Tripucka to give the Blue Devils one of the best midfield lines in the country.

WELCOME HOME: Junior David Lawson (Westford Middlesex School) leads the second midfield unit and has 14-6-20 totals, with a career-high four goals vs. Virginia; junior M Henry Meyer (Newton/Belmont Hill) has played in four games; senior G Christopher Shannon (Andover/Phillips), a former football long snapper, played in two games (3 saves, 2 GA); assistant coach Chris Gabrielli played at UMass (2001).

COACH?S CORNER: John Danowski ? Since taking over the program in the wake of the 2006 scandal, Danowski has led the Blue Devils to the Final Four in each of his six seasons, matching the record set by Syracuse?s John Desko for the start of a tenure. A veteran of 30 seasons overall with previous stops at C.W. Post and Hofstra, Danowski?s 314-162 career mark puts him third among active Div. 1 coaches all time in wins and one of just six ever to reach 300.

CHAMPIONSHIP OR BUST: The Devils have the depth and balance on offense to overwhelm teams from all parts of the field, with sophomore attackmen Walsh, Josh Dionne and Jordan Wolf all cracking the 30-goal barrier. Wolf (team-high 30 assists) and Rotanz are the keys to the high-low game, and they were held goal-less (with five combined assists) in the two previous meetings with Maryland. Not surprisingly, Duke will look for a big game out of Costabile and control tempo, and also not get frustrated by Maryland?s slow-down tactics ? the Devils are one of the worst teams in the nation in man-down defense (41-of-74, .554).

THE ROAD TO FOXBORO: After graduating large pieces of last year?s NCAA finalist, Maryland had an up-and-down regular season, never winning more than three in a row. The Terps rose off the mat by scoring the final three goals in the NCAA opening-round win at Lehigh, the last by senior Joe Cummings with six seconds left as they held possession for the final 4:46 of the game. Maryland then dominated possession again (more than 40 minutes) to overwhelm Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals behind three goals from senior Drew Snider.

STUD: Jesse Bernhardt ? The junior long-stick midfielder and captain was named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, leading the Terps with 56 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. Bernhardt, along with an improving close defense of sophomores Michael Ehrhardt and Brian Cooper with freshman Goran Murray, will be a key part of the Terps? game plan against a potentially lethal and deep Duke midfield. Bernhardt also plays the wing on faceoffs.

PLAYER YOU WILL KNOW BY MONDAY: Niko Amato ? His overall numbers were a bit down during his sophomore season (7.35 GAA, .543 save pct.), but the Terps are hoping Amato will continue to be a prime-time player in the NCAAs. Amato was at his best last May, particularly in a 13-save effort against Duke in last year?s semifinal round. He also had 14 saves in the home win against Duke in March.

WELCOME HOME: John Tillman coached at Harvard from 2008-10 before taking over the Terps last season, while assistant Kevin Warne also was on the Crimson staff; senior Michael Shakespeare (Walpole Governor?s Academy) runs with the second midfield unit and is fourth on the team in goals (18-2-20)

COACH?S CORNER: John Tillman ? In just his second season with the program, the 42-year-old Tillman has led the Terps to the Final Four both times as an unseeded team. He is 24-10 at Maryland, and 44-29 overall in five seasons. Tillman is 4-4 in his career against Duke.

CHAMPIONSHIP OR BUST: The Terps are at their best when they are controlling possession, winning ground balls and limiting the opposing team?s chances ? Hopkins? 16 shots were the second-fewest ever in an NCAA tournament game. They also were called for 12 stall warnings against Hopkins, but their offense is patient and efficient. A lot of pressure will be on junior Curtis Holmes (50 percent on faceoffs) to hold his own at the ?X? against Duke?s Costabile, and Maryland will want to get out to a decent lead, as it did in the home win against Duke on March 3 (5-1 after one quarter), in order to get the game on its terms.

Business Demands Career Employment Strategies That Develop ...

For many years, the business world has been asking higher education to meet their needs of developing future knowledge workers who are self-leaders that take responsibility for their actions and have solid decision making and problem solving skills. An article in the Newsweek?s November 13, 2006 issue indicates that higher education has yet to hear this decades long message.

In this article, a recent graduate of an Ivy League School, shared her experiences that she lacked the fundamentals from completing a W-2 to how to rent an apartment. What was interesting was that she noted that she was not alone. According to her article, she referenced a recent study of career employment (source not cited) that hundreds of employers found new college graduates ?woefully unprepared? for the job market.

For years education from K-13 has focused on learning or the acquisition of knowledge, but has miserably failed on performance or the application of knowledge. Universities or higher education continue this tradition and the 21st century is reaping the results ? unprepared workers who are highly intelligent, but can?t negotiate themselves out of a cardboard box.

The University of Michigan Annual Recruiting Trends has documented the needs of employers for over 30 years. In its 2002 report, employers want graduates who have a passion for the position along with a total package including:

Verbal communication skills

Written communication skills

Leadership

Teamwork

Computer skills

Work ethics

Integrity

Dr. Carol Di-Amico in her research Workforce 2020 indicated that employers looked for the following when hiring experienced workers:

Leadership 73%

Problem solving skills 69%

Work ethics 68%

Job specific skills 61%

Creativity 60%

Organizational skills 49%

Interpersonal skills 45%

Given that many employers are looking for skill sets that are not currently being taught at the higher academic levels and probably not at the high school levels for those not immediately attending college suggests that these institutions of learning are indeed setting many young people up to fail. This would not be such a tragedy if they were not collecting thousands of dollars.

Finally, the author of this article in Newsweek believed that she invested her dollars to better advance her thinking abilities. She further wrote that her thinking was limited to the academic world and failed to transfer into the real world. Yet, it is those same professors in the academic world who insist that those in the business world where profits and losses are both earned and measured on a daily basis do not understand how to think and that education cannot be viewed as a business. This attitude is great if you are not accountable for securing results. Until education realizes its purpose is to successfully complete the next learning sequence (that means the graduates are gainfully employed in their field of expertise for at least one year) where personal and business leadership is highly developed along with all those interpersonal skills necessary for success, this young person?s experience will be multiplied by thousands more and our nation will continue to suffer.

Times-Picayune to cut paper to 3 days a week

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The Times-Picayune, one of the nation's oldest newspapers, will no longer offer print editions seven days a week and instead plans to offer three printed issues a week starting in the fall. The change means New Orleans would become the largest metro area in the nation without a daily newspaper in the digital age.

The changes announced Thursday were combined with similar moves at three major Alabama daily newspapers also owned by the Newhouse family group's Advance Publications. The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The Huntsville Times will switch to publishing three days a week as part of a new focus on online news. At all four papers, there will be unspecified staff cuts. All four papers will continue to publish continuously on their websites, and online access will remain free.

Newspapers have struggled in recent years as consumers increasingly get their news online. Print advertising declined as the economy went into recession, and newspapers have yet to learn how to make online advertising as profitable as its printed counterpart.

"For us, this isn't about print versus digital, this is about creating a very successful multi-platform media company that addresses the ever-changing needs of our readers, our online users and our advertisers," said Advance Publications' president of local digital strategy, Randy Siegel, in an interview with The Associated Press. "This change is not easy, but it's essential for us to remain relevant."

Siegel didn't say how much money the reduced print runs in Louisiana and Alabama would save, nor how many staff members would be laid off or hired in the new online units.

"To get good quality information is not cheap," said Jennifer Greer, chair of the journalism department at the University of Alabama. "What you are seeing is people trying to figure out a business model that works in a digital age."

The decision was met with sadness by some residents in New Orleans, where The Times-Picayune won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Staffers continued reporting despite being forced out of the newspaper's offices amid widespread flooding and power outages.

The storm drove away thousands of residents, some of whom never came back. The city ? and its newspaper ? struggled to recover in the years since.

The paper was a lifeline for the Southern, working-class city, providing government announcements, obituaries, Carnival and scoops on local corruption, said Cheron Brylski, a 53-year-old New Orleans-based political consultant. Not having the paper every day is like losing a sports team, she said.

"Where is New Orleans headed since Katrina? This is not something that helps our recovery," she said.

The papers in Alabama also have long histories. The Mobile paper has roots to 1813 with the founding of the Mobile Gazette and became a daily in 1832, according to a history of the publication on al.com. And in 2007, the Birmingham News won a Pulitzer Prize for a series on corruption in Alabama's two-year college system.

Birmingham News employees were told during morning meetings that longtime Editor Tom Scarritt will retire this fall when the new companies are created, according to two reporters who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the changes for the company.

In New Orleans, a new company, the NOLA Media Group, would be created to oversee both The Times-Picayune and its affiliated website, NOLA.com.

The announcements mirror changes Advance Publications made in Michigan. In 2009, the company shut the Ann Arbor News but created AnnArbor.com, a news website that still publishes print editions on Thursday and Sunday.

In February, it launched the MLive Media Group, which runs MLive.com, to focus its efforts in Michigan digitally. Meanwhile, all of its eight other newspapers in the state offer three days of home delivery with newsstand sales from three to seven days a week.

Newspaper analyst Ken Doctor, who writes the Newsonomics blog, said the company is trying to hold on to declining print ad revenue for a few more years, and expects Advance to eventually cut print runs at its other newspapers in New Jersey, Oregon, Ohio and elsewhere. The company owns The Oregonian in Portland, Ore.; The Plain Dealer in Cleveland; and The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J.

"It's a big bet to retain profitability and hope that in the shock therapy, there are profits on the other end," he said.

Print circulation has been dropping steadily over the years at the four newspapers affected by Thursday's announcement, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. On average, the four papers' circulation in the half year through March fell about 6 percent from a year ago.

Nonetheless, the Times-Picayune remains one of the nation's most successful newspapers. Of the top 50 large-sized markets, the newspaper has the highest rate of readership of its daily edition in the U.S., according to Austin, Texas-based Scarborough Research, a firm that tracks the industry.

The Times-Picayune's average paid circulation was 133,557 in the six months through March, down 49 percent compared to March 2005, a few months before Hurricane Katrina hit.

The Birmingham News' circulation of 103,729 is down 29 percent from five years ago; the Press-Register's of 82,088 is down 18 percent; and The Huntsville Times' of 44,725 is down 15 percent.

Die-hard supporters and even Mayor Mitch Landrieu pledged to make sure the newspaper remained a part of New Orleans culture.

"Through wars and floods, the 'Aints and a Saints Super Bowl victory, the TP has been and remains an integral part of our daily routine and our culture," Landrieu said.

Anne Milling, a longtime member of the advisory board to The Times-Picayune, said an online-focused model wouldn't work in New Orleans. She said she and other supporters were exploring bringing in new owners committed to a daily paper, or even starting a new daily publication.

"We always do things differently," she said. "It's part of our tradition: You wake up with a cup of chicory coffee and read the newspaper."
