India's fight against Maoist rebels also hurts activists trying to better lives, HRW says

NEW DELHI - An international rights group says India's government targets civilian activists in its fight against Maoist rebels.

The report Human Rights Watch released Monday documents random arrests, torture and mistreatment of such activists in the states of Orissa, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.

The group's South Asia director Meenakshi Ganguly said that "aid workers and rights defenders need to be allowed to do their work safely and not be accused of having a political agenda simply because they bring attention to abuses."

The Indian Home Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The report comes a month after security forces in Chattisgarh killed 19 villagers on suspicion of being Maoists or sympathizers.

Maoists are operating in a majority of Indian states, and the government calls them the country's greatest internal security threat.

HBT: Jays send Snider to Pirates for Lincoln

Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports the Pirates have acquired outfielder Travis Snider from the Blue Jays for right-hander Brad Lincoln. Both were first-round picks in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, as Snider was picked 14th overall while Lincoln was picked fourth.

The Pirates have been looking for another outfielder for a while now. Snider isn?t a big name like Justin Upton of the Diamondbacks, but the Pirates didn?t have to give up the farm to get him, either. The 24-year-old entered play tonight with an underwhelming .247/.305/.429 batting line over 914 plate appearances in the big leagues and has a penchant for the strikeout, but he could still develop as a middle-of-the-order power threat. He?ll be under team control through 2016.

Lincoln, 27, has a solid 2.73 ERA and 60/14 K/BB ratio over 59 1/3 innings this season. The Blue Jays could give him another chance as a starter, but he?s more likely to be successful in his current relief role.

True Built Home, Inc. Wins 2012 Talk of the ... - Customer Care News

Achieving a high customer satisfaction rating of 4.5 stars has earned True Built Home, Inc. the prestigious CMUS Talk of the Town Customer Satisfaction Award in the Home Builders and Developers category.

The Talk of the Town Awards, presented by Talk of the Town News, Customer Care News magazine and Celebration Media U.S. (CMUS), honors companies and professionals that provide excellent customer service as reported by their customers through no-cost, user-review websites, blogs, social networks, business rating services, and other honors and accolades. This data is analyzed by a team of researchers who calculate a company?s CMUS Power Rating?. Only those that receive a 4-star to 5-star rating receive the CMUS Talk of the Town Customer Satisfaction Award.

Washington home builder True Built Home was founded by Lewis D. Mann and David King, who have a combined 34 years of experience in the on-your-lot builder program, one in the field and one behind the scenes. Between the two, they have played a role in the design, pricing, marketing or building aspects of 2,000-plus homes, and have brought that experience together in True Built Home to serve the greater Pacific Northwest.

?Our dynamic, versatile and highly motivated team delivers the highest quality home, best design principles and overall one of the best values in the industry,? says Mann. True Built Home uses several ingenious yet common sense ways to truly meet clients? needs. ?We maximize the value that the client receives; build with quality, beautiful finishes that others charge extra for; and maintain communication throughout the process,? he adds.

True Built Home offers a large selection of stock plans. ?The designs we offer are intelligent and functional, able to meet the demands of the modern family,? says Mann. However, the company recognizes that people might like everything about a plan except for one or two small things, so flexibility is there for changes. ?We have two on-staff designers, both with years of hands-on, practical experience in construction. They can take our stock plan and, for a modest fee, redraw the plan to be exactly what you are looking for. Or, they can start from a blank sheet of paper and draw the plan that?s in your head, and from scratch create an entirely new design just for you.?

Another way True Built Home provides superior customer service is through its website, which offers a large volume of information so clients can educate themselves about construction and the building process. In addition, the website allows clients the freedom to price projects in the comfort of their own home and without the pressure of a sales person.

In the construction industry, there are constantly challenges due to weather, change orders, fluctuation in prices and more. ?How we cope with and meet those challenges is important,? says Mann, adding that he always educates the sales staff, company employees, subcontractors and vendors that customer service must always be the goal, especially given the negative reputation contractors often receive. ?It takes real earnest effort to make our clients happy, and that is a key to our success. We do not measure our company?s success by the profit we make, but rather if our clients are content and happy with our home, team and program.?

True Built Home has several offices throughout Washington. For more information, call the Western Washington office at 253-272-5300 or go online to www.truebuilthome.com.

I'd like a literate rp partner~

Hey there! Call me Yuri. I've been roleplaying for almost seven years and been writing stories and novels for more than twelve. I'm into a lot of genres and I am also very flexible when it comes to crazy ideas and plots--flexible in general, actually. :3 Here's more about me--and this will be long, along with the requirements, but you should read it all~ .3.

Image

+ I write from 700 words to 1500 per character, and if we're doubling, I will double the amount of words.

+ I live in the EST time zone. However, I am always up fairly late into the night, sometimes 2 or 3 am.

+ I have a phone. :3 I use it to check fairly often. c:

+ I like being friends with my partners. ;3 I'm very friendly and I do not have severe mood swings, I promise. xD

+ I like to chat with my rp partners. I use MSN constantly, but I usually stay away from other programs.

+ I love romance. <3 And I love angst. Put those together and you have a happy Yuri. I don't do love at first sight. That's boring~

+ As for Genres, I am very flexible in those terms. But all my roleplays will have romance in them, whether it is angst and tragedy ridden or fluffy and cute.

+ The rating will be up to you. I am perfectly fine with mature content, whether it be gore, rape or sexual situations, and I am also fine keeping it PG13. But if you turn this into a Saw movie, I will not be fine with that. If you turn this into a porn movie, I will not be fine with that either. :/ Bedroom scenes can be tastefully written out if that is comfortable with you.

+ I roleplay only on this site. Either through pm or threads; if we are doing mature content I suppose pms are the better way to go.

+ My characters will curse if they are the type to. |D

+ I use a lot of details and imagery in my writing--it makes things all the more fun, I think. ;3

+ I am very visual. I will put in graphics, pictures, and sometimes music along with my posts. Graphics like the ones I have in this post. |D With names and maybe a quote or something. :3 Makes things fun, right? I don't expect the same from you, but if you'd like, I'd be willing to make you some for your character.

Genres!

- Realistic
- Futuristic(Dystopian/Utopian)
- Myths(think Greek myths or folklore)
- Medieval
- Victorian
- Steampunk
- Supernatural
- Sci-Fi,
- Historical
- Fantasy
...etc...etc.

+ Here are some of the things I really like; the ones with * means I have a plot for it. ;3
- Fae lore. Maybe you've read Holly Black's novels--those are very good. Stuff with Changelings, glamour, dark and twisted fae--not Tinker Bell. xD
- Twisted Fairy tales. A bit dark, no? But I still love it. <3
- Alice in Wonderland. * We're all mad here. >:3
- Mafia. * C'mon, guns and suits and all that jazz.
- Vampires/other mythical creatures. I mean you know. As long as they aren't sparkly and stuff.
- Mythical lore/Mythology * Ahhh, myths are a beautiful thing.
- Time Travel. It always makes things wonderfully loopy and complicated.
-

- Some topics off of books I like to roleplay--either with completely original characters or mixing in canon characters, or completely canon.

- Hunger Games.
- Holly Black's Tithe trilogy.
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. * I love love love this book. If you wanna rp this book, jasklfalksdf I will love you.
- Chronicles of Narnia. * My childhood. :3
- His Dark Matters Trilogy. Awesome series. Awesome story. Probably will make for an awesome rp.
- Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire One of the best things ever. <3

- Movies + anime + tv shows:

- Inception
- Push *
- In Time
- Avatar: the Last Air Bender
- The Borgias
- The Tudors
- Naruto

- Games <3

- Alice: Madness Returns
- Persona Series
- Dragon Age
- Skyrim

- ...There's more, I know it. Just ask! xD I have a few plots in mind too, so ask ask ask! c:

Image
+ The ability to roleplay as a male character. I'll be honest and say I am better at playing as a female character. However, I can double if you'd like--and I do roleplay well as guys too, if I do say so myself. |D

+ Literacy. Did I really have to write this? .3.;; Like I've said above, I write 700 to 1500 words per character, and I do expect you to respond likewise.

+ Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation. And sentence structure. No run-ons like this they are so annoying and I want to cry every single time I see one and crying makes my contacts go weird okay? (...It was so hard to write that, you have no idea! ;w;) I do make typos time to time, and I don't mind if you do, either. However, if it's going on five times in a paragraph I'm going to be sad. xD

+ Maturity. I can be random and all happy-go-lucky when we're chatting, but I write earnestly and seriously. I'd like the same from you.

+ Creativity. I will drop you like this if you stick a Mary-Sue or a Gary-Stu on me. I swear I will. ;~; I don't like to do that, but I cannot handle perfect or cliche characters. These characters are human. Human. As in, they have flaws and bad qualities, as well as good ones. Keep that in mind. |D

+ Contribution. I want in-put and teamwork. I am bad at making decisions for two people--not because I'm wishy-washy, but because I want this to be a group effort, yes?

+ Consideration. We both have lives outside of the internet; I am sure one of us will be busy, sick, on a trip, or etc at one point in time. I perfectly understand that, but I'd still like a warning if you are going to be away~ Of course, I will do the same. ;D

+ Honest opinions. Tell me stuff! ;D Tell me what you think of an idea, character, plot development! I do not sugar coat and I do not take well to it either. |D I can take honest opinions.

+ Dedication. I like to post. I do. Like, once a day. Please? ;w; I can understand if it's due to a special circumstance--or even if one person posts each day. :3 And if you are leaving, do say so. I swear I will not make a fuss about it. xD

This ended up being long, like I thought. :/ Hmmm. Well, if you've read all this, thank you~ So if there is anyone interested, please pm me or post a reply~ <33

Syrian forces pound rebels, declare Damascus victory

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - The government of Bashar al-Assad declared victory on Sunday in a hard-fought battle for Syria's capital Damascus, and pounded rebels who control of parts of its largest city Aleppo.

Assad's forces have struggled as never before to maintain their grip on the country over the past two weeks after a major rebel advance into the two largest cities and an explosion that killed four top security officials.

Government forces have succeeded in reimposing their grip the capital after a punishing battle, but rebels are still in control of sections of Aleppo, clashing with reinforced army troops for several days.

"Today I tell you, Syria is stronger... In less than a week they were defeated (in Damascus) and the battle failed," Foreign Minister Walid Moualem said on a visit to Iran, Assad's main ally in a region where other neighbors have forsaken him.

"So they moved on to Aleppo and I assure you, their plots will fail."

Rebel fighters, patrolling opposition districts in flat-bed trucks flying green-white-and-black "independence" flags, said they were holding off Assad's forces in the south-western Aleppo district of Salaheddine, where clashes have gone on for days.

Opposition activists also reported fighting in other rebel-held districts of Aleppo, in what could herald the start of a decisive phase in the battle for Syria's commercial hub, after the army sent tank columns and troop reinforcements last week.

Helicopter gunships hovered over the city shortly after dawn and the thud of artillery boomed across neighborhoods. Syrian state television said soldiers was repelling "terrorists" in Salaheddine and had captured several of their leaders.

Some rebel-held areas visited by Reuters were empty of residents. Fighters were basing themselves in houses - some clearly abandoned in a hurry, with food still in the fridges.

A burnt out tank lay in the street, while nearby another one had been captured intact, covered in tarpaulin and left in a car park, perhaps for the rebels themselves to use against any ground assault by Assad's forces.

In a largely empty street, flanked by closed shops and run-down buildings, women clad in long black abaya cloaks walked with children next to walls daubed with rebel graffiti - "Freedom", "Free Syrian Army" and "Down with Bashar".

Rubbish lay uncollected and in one street families were packing vans full of mattresses in apparent preparation to flee.

KILLING MACHINE

The leader of Syria's main political opposition group, the Syrian National Council, called for foreign allies to provide heavy weapons to fight Assad's "killing machine".

"The rebels are fighting with primitive weapons...We want weapons that we can stop tanks and planes with. This is what we want," SNC chief Abdelbasset Seida said in Abu Dhabi.

He also urged foreign allies to circumvent the divided U.N. Security Council and intervene to help topple Assad.

"Our friends and allies will bear responsibility for what is happening in Aleppo if they do not move soon," he said, adding that talks would start on forming a transitional government.

Arab League head Nabil Elaraby said the battle in Aleppo amounted to "war crimes", and perpetrators would eventually be punished, Egypt's MENA state news agency reported.

The Arab League has suspended Syria and lined up with the West and Turkey against Assad. Assad's government blames Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia and Qatar, for the revolt.

Assad's ruling structure draws strongly on his Alawite minority sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, while his opposition is drawn largely from the Sunni Muslim majority, backed by Sunni leaders who rule nearly all other Arab states.

That has raised fears that the 16-month-old conflict could spread across the wider Middle East, where a sectarian divide between Sunnis and Shi'ites has been at the root of violence in Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and elsewhere.

Shi'ite Iran demonstrated its firm support for Assad by hosting his foreign minister. At a joint news conference with Moualem, Iran's own Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi rebuked the West and Arab states for holding the "illusion" that Assad could be easily replaced from power in a managed transition.

CRUCIAL TEST

In Damascus, where Assad's forces pushed back a rebel offensive following a deadly bomb attack on his inner circle, many residents have fled fighting in the outskirts for relative safety in the heart of the capital.

Even the center has been shattered by the violence. Shops open only between 9 am and 3 pm, food prices have soared and no one dares walk outside after dusk, even in the holy month of Ramadan when streets are normally packed late into the night with people celebrating after a day of fasting.

"To begin with I was with the regime, for sure," said Ahmed, from one of the southern suburbs where the army, backed by helicopter and tanks, launched its fierce counter offensive.

"But now, no, the regime must go. Take what they want with them, but they must go."

The battle for Aleppo, a city of 2.5 million people, is a decisive test of the government's ability to retake its two main cities. It has committed huge military resources to the battle there after losing control of outlying rural areas and some border crossings with Turkey and Iraq.

Fighters from the rebel Free Syrian Army were also in evidence on the approaches to Aleppo from the north, where many villagers were still shopping or tending their fields.

One man in his 40s, carrying his family on a motorcycle, said he was fleeing the fighting in the city.

"We are living in a war zone," he told Reuters. "I and my relatives are just going back and forth, trying to stay away from the fighting. We left Aleppo when we saw smoke and helicopters firing."

The British-based Observatory, which compiles reports from anti-government activists, said 26 people were killed in Aleppo on Saturday and 190 total across Syria. It reported fighting in Deraa, the cradle of the revolution, Homs, the scene of some of the bloodiest combat, and Hama. There was no way to verify its figures.

The fighting in Aleppo follows a July 18 bomb attack that killed four top security officials including Assad's defense minister, intelligence chief and powerful brother-in-law.

New-home sales take biggest drop in a year

CNBC's Rick Santelli reports on the disappointing numbers on June's new home sales, with CNBC's Diana Olick.

By Reuters

New single-family home sales in June fell by the most in more than a year and prices resumed their downward trend, suggesting a setback for the budding housing market recovery.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales tumbled 8.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted 350,000-unit annual rate, the lowest rate in five months. The percent decline was the largest since February 2011.

"The number is a disappointment, although consistent with the weakness in U.S. existing home sales," said Vassili Serebriakov,?senior currency strategist at Wells Fargo.

May's sales pace was revised to up to 382,000 units from the previously reported 369,000 units, taking some of the sting from the report.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales at a 370,000-unit rate last month. Compared to June last year, new home sales were up 15.1 percent.

The housing market had been improving in recent months, with new home construction in June hitting its highest level since October 2008 and confidence among home builders this month touching its best level in more than 5 years.

Last month, the median price of a new home fell 3.2 percent from a year ago, adding to the report's weak tenor.

The inventory of new homes on the market increased 0.7 percent to 144,000 in June, but remained near record lows. At June's sales pace it would take 4.9 months to clear the houses from the market, up from 4.5 months in May.

New home sales last month dragged down by a 60 percent drop in the Northeast and an 8.6 percent fall in the South. Sales in the West rose 2.1 percent and were up 14.6 percent in the Midwest.

Karl Laventure, "Zombie Cannibal" High on Bath Salts, Threatens to Eat Cops

Karl Laventure, a man believed to be high on bath salts, attacked police officers and took 20 jolts from a Taser as he threatened to eat them yesterday.

Frightened golfers at a driving range in Alpharetta, Ga., called police when Laventure went on a rampage, running around half-naked waving a golf club.

Video footage shows the crazed man, 21, being held down by several officers and screaming incoherently about God, Biggie, Tupac, etc.

"I'll eat you! Don't make me eat you!" he threatened.

The case is eerily similar to that of Rudy Eugene, who ate the face off a homeless man in Miami, Fla., and sparked rumors of a zombie apocalypse.

Eugene, also believed to be on bath salts while attacking Ronald Poppo, who miraculously survived, was surprisingly not on anything but pot.

In any case, he was shot to death by Miami police.

In yesterday's incident, Laventure "just came running at us," Officer Ross Hancock of the Gwinnett County (Ga.) Police Department told WSBTV.

When his partner blasted him with painful pepper spray, "He didn't even wipe his eyes, he just kept them open." The cops then tasered him.

Although that took Laventure down, he hopped right back up again. "We had to Tase him approximately five more times," said Hancock.

"It took several officers to hold him down to get him cuffed ... He was still talking gibberish, still cussing, still saying he wanted to eat us, eat other people."

He reportedly told the officers "Im'ma eat you!" repeatedly.

The man was restrained long enough to get him to the hospital, but there the insanity started again and he had to be tasered another 14 times.

He was charged with misdemeanor offenses of disorderly conduct and obstruction.

The DEA is attempting to control the wave of dangerous synthetic drugs that go by bath salts, K2, Spice, Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky, Bliss, and Purple Rain.

"The chemicals that have been made illegal and designated Schedule 1 controlled substances are mephedron, methylone and MDPV - but they are the ingredients, not the products themselves," DEA spokesperson Barbara Carreno said.

"The challenge with synthetic drugs is that any good chemist can tweak their molecular structure and formula and you have a new product, which isn't illegal," she explained. "It is hard for the law to keep up with them."
