Appeals board upholds permit for Christo project

DENVER (AP) ? An appeals board is upholding the Bureau of Land Management's decision to grant the artist Christo a permit for his Over the River project, which involves temporarily suspending 5.9 miles worth of silvery fabric panels in sections over 42 miles of the Arkansas River.

The Interior Board of Land Appeals on Friday rejected arguments that the BLM didn't fully consider impacts of Over the River before granting the permit.

Meanwhile, two lawsuits challenging Over the River in state and federal courts are still pending.

"We can now move on from the agency hijinks and into federal court where we can get an unbiased review of this project," said Michael Harris, a lawyer representing the group Rags Over the Arkansas River, which is trying to block Christo's plan. "We fully expect the court to find that the OTR project approval is illegal."

New York-based Christo said in a written statement that he remains confident that state and federal permitting processes were thorough and complete. "This is one of three legal hurdles that needed to be overcome, and I am very happy with this decision," Christo said.

Even if Christo wins in the lawsuits, it would be at least 2016 before the project would be ready for public display.

He and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude, got their first inkling for Over the River in 1992.

Work to set up a system of anchors and cables to suspend the fabric panels over the river would unfold over roughly two years. The project would be displayed for two weeks in the month of August, when the river would be calm enough for rafters to peer up at the fabric as they float underneath and when drivers on U.S. 50 along the river could look down.

Denver-based environmental consultant Rocky Smith, who was among those filing the administrative appeal of the BLM's permitting decision, said he still thinks Over the River is "horribly inappropriate" for the canyon Christo plans to use.

Opponents contend the project threatens bighorn sheep, public safety, traffic on U.S. 50, and businesses that depend on the scenic river to draw anglers, rafters and tourists.

Christo's team has said it plans dozens of measures to mitigate impacts.

NSA leaker's father says Snowden may return to U.S.

By Susan Heavey

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The father of former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden said in an interview that while he has not had recent contact with him, he is reasonably confident his son would return to the United States if certain conditions were met.

Those conditions could include not detaining Snowden before trial, not subjecting him to a gag order and letting him choose the location of his trial, NBC News said on Friday.

The NBC report added that Lonnie Snowden plans to make those points in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to be sent through his lawyer later on Friday. Representatives for the Justice Department could not be reached immediately for comment on the letter.

Lonnie Snowden, in part of the NBC interview that aired on the "Today Show," also said he is concerned that his son, a former contractor for the National Security Agency, was being manipulated by others, including people from the anti-government secrecy group WikiLeaks.

"I am concerned about those who surround him," he told NBC. "Wikileaks - if you look at past history - their focus isn't necessarily the Constitution of the United States. It's simply to release as much information as possible. So that alone is a concern for me."

Edward Snowden, an American, fled the United States to Hong Kong in May, a few weeks before publication in the Guardian and the Washington Post of details he said he provided about secret U.S. government surveillance of Internet and phone traffic.

He faces espionage charges in the United States and has requested political asylum in Ecuador. He has not been seen since he arrived in Moscow on Sunday, but Russian officials said he was in a transit area at Sheremetyevo airport.

Snowden's father said he has not had contact with his son since April, NBC reported.

"I love him. I would like to have the opportunity to communicate with him. I don't want to put him in peril," he said in the interview.

Lonnie Snowden said he did not think his son had committed treason, even though his son broke U.S. laws in releasing details about the federal monitoring programs.

"He has betrayed his government, but I don't believe that he's betrayed the people of the United States," he said.

Cincinnati, OH, June 28, 2013 -- Iron deficiency is a worldwide problem, especially in developing countries and among infants and pregnant women. In infancy, iron deficiency is associated with poorer cognitive, motor, and social-emotional outcomes. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers report on a 25-year follow-up of infants studied in Costa Rica for iron deficiency.

Betsy Lozoff, MD, and colleagues from the University of Michigan, Oakland University, and Instituto de Atencin Peditrica, Costa Rica, completed a 25-year follow-up of 191 infants (12-23 months old) from an urban community near San Jose, Costa Rica. The original analysis compared those with chronic, severe iron deficiency in infancy with those who were iron-sufficient before and/or after iron therapy. All infants with iron deficiency received iron therapy for 3 months. Because iron deficiency likely had lasted for months before it was identified and treated, some infants still had reduced iron status even after iron-deficiency anemia had been corrected.

122 subjects participated in the adult follow-up assessment. On average, the 33 adults who had chronic iron deficiency as infants completed one less year of schooling and were less likely to complete secondary school or pursue further education or training, or get married. Additionally, the chronically iron-deficient group rated their emotional health worse and reported more negative emotions and detachment/dissociation.

Although outcomes were better in those individuals who became iron-sufficient after 3 months of iron therapy, this long-term follow-up shows that individuals with chronic iron deficiency in infancy had poorer adult functions in all domains except for physical health and employment. According to Dr. Lozoff, "This observation suggests that poor long-term outcome, at least for overall functioning, may be prevented if iron treatment is given before iron deficiency becomes chronic and severe." Therefore it is important to prevent iron deficiency, monitor iron status, and initiate treatment as soon as a deficiency is detected.

Bombs in Iraq kill 19 people

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Bombs in Iraq targeting a checkpoint run by government-allied Sunni militiamen, a Shiite tribal leader's funeral and a soccer field killed at least 19 people on Friday, in the latest strikes by militants seeking to destabilize the country.

Iraq is in the midst of its deadliest and most sustained wave of violence since 2008, raising fears the nation is returning to the widespread sectarian-charged bloodshed that pushed it to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. More than 2,000 people have been killed in bombings and other violent attacks since the start of April.

The deadliest attack, which killed at least 11, struck the militia checkpoint shortly before midday in the village of Zangoura, which is just south of the former insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, some 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad, according to police.

The checkpoint was manned by members of the Sahwa, who are Sunni militiamen that joined forces with U.S. troops to fight al-Qaida during the Iraq War. They remain on the Shiite-led central government's payroll for security forces, making them an occasional target for Sunni insurgents who consider them traitors.

One bomb, apparently planted by the side of the road, was the source of the initial blast. A second detonated as villagers rushed to help the victims of the first explosion, police said.

In the town of Dujail, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a tent set up to welcome mourners at the funeral of a local Shiite tribal leader.

Dujail mayor Naif al-Khazraji and Ali al-Haidari, a senior security official in the town, said the blast killed at least four and wounded four others. Al-Khazraji said those killed included a police captain who tried to shoot the bomber before he detonated his explosives.

Dujail is a predominantly Shiite town surrounded by mostly Sunni communities.

Shortly after unset, police said a bomb went off near a soccer field in the Shiite-majority town of Madain just south of Baghdad, killing 4 people and wounding 15 others.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Al-Qaida in Iraq frequently deploys car bombs and coordinated explosives, and often targets Shiites and security forces, including Sahwa members.

Police and hospital officials confirmed the casualties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Earlier Friday, Iraqi officials raised the death toll from a series of bombings late Thursday that targeted soccer fans watching the Confederations Cup semifinal between Spain and Italy in cafes in and around Baghdad. They put the number of those killed at 36.

The deadliest attack, which killed 20 people, took place at a large cafe in the city of Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad. The assailants staggered the blasts, apparently so that the second one ? a car bomb ? would kill people rushing to help those hurt in the initial explosion. Rescue teams found several bodies only on Friday morning, police said.

Other attacks late Thursday struck cafes in Baghdad and the Shiite town of Jbala south of the capital.

Plaintiffs in gay marriage case wed in SF, LA

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The four plaintiffs in the U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned California's same-sex marriage ban tied the knot Friday, just hours after a federal appeals court freed gay couples to obtain marriage licenses in the state for the first time in 4 1/2 years.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris presided at the San Francisco City Hall wedding of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier as hundreds of supporters looked on and cheered. The couple sued to overturn the state's voter-approved gay marriage ban along with Jeff Katami and Paul Zarrillo, who married at Los Angeles City Hall 90 minutes later with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presiding.

"By joining the case against Proposition 8, they represented thousands of couples like themselves in their fight for marriage equality," Harris, who had asked the appeals court to act swiftly, said during Stier and Perry's brief ceremony. "Through the ups and downs, the struggles and the triumphs, they came out victorious."

Harris declared Perry, 48, and Stier, 50, "spouses for life," but during their vows, the Berkeley couple took each other as "lawfully wedded wife." One of their twin sons served as ring-bearer.

Although the couples fought for the right to wed for years, their weddings came together in a flurry when a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a brief order Friday afternoon dissolving, "effective immediately," a stay it had imposed on gay marriages while the lawsuit challenging the ban advanced through the courts.

Sponsors of California's same-sex marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, called the appeals court's swift action "outrageous." Under Supreme Court rules, the losing side in a legal dispute has 25 days to ask the high court to rehear the case, and Proposition 8's backers had not yet announced whether they would do so.

"The resumption of same-sex marriage this day has been obtained by illegitimate means. If our opponents rejoice in achieving their goal in a dishonorable fashion, they should be ashamed," said Andy Pugno, general counsel for a coalition of religious conservative groups that sponsored the 2008 ballot measure.

"It remains to be seen whether the fight can go on, but either way, it is a disgraceful day for California," Pugno said.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday that Proposition 8's sponsors lacked authority to challenge the ban after Harris and Gov. Jerry Brown, both Democrats, refused to defend the ban in court.

The decision lets stand a trial judge's declaration that the ban violates the civil rights of gay Californians and cannot be enforced.

The Supreme Court said earlier this week that it would not finalize its ruling in the Proposition 8 case until after the 25-day period, which ends July 21. But San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who joined the two couples in the lawsuit, said Friday that the 9th Circuit panel had the power to lift the stay it imposed.

"The fact of the matter is the only thing holding up the weddings was the stay that the 9th Circuit had in place," Herrera said. "The fact that there is a separate 25-day period allowing the petition to go for a rehearing is separate and apart from that stay."

Brown directed California counties to start performing same-sex marriages immediately after the appeals court's order. A memo from the Department of Public Health said "same-sex marriage is again legal in California" and ordered county clerks to resume issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

Given that word did not come down from the appeals court until mid-afternoon, most counties were not prepared to stay open late to accommodate potential crowds. The clerks in a few counties announced that they would stay open a few hours later Friday.

A jubilant San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced that same-sex couples would be able to marry all weekend in his city, which is hosting its annual gay pride celebration.

Poppy turns iPhone into ViewMasterlike 3D display and camera video

Remember the View-Master? We've already seen goggles from Hasbro and Sanwa that transform the iPhone into a 3D viewer, but Poppy plans to spice things up by adding 3D photo and video capture to the mix. The device, which contains no electronics, is about the size of medium pair of binoculars and features a slot which accepts an iPhone 5. It's launching on Kickstarter today for less than $50, along with a matching app. We got the chance to take a prototype for a spin and it worked like a charm. Check out the gallery and campaign link below, then read on after the break.

Opinion: Why Mobile Games Are Good For The Video Game Industry

I recently came across this user review for Angry Birds Star Wars in the App Store: ?Best game ever made!!!?

Oh, boy.

I can?t help but cringe when I see these sorts of comments. People are entitled to their own opinions, of course, and flinging miniature birds toward destructible objects is indeed a swell time. Nevertheless ? and I say this as plainly as I can ? Angry Birds Star Wars is not the best game ever made.?

But there?s no use in denying it. The world of video gaming is changing, and the above user?s sentiment is a common one. Mobile games have become increasingly popular in recent years, some of them astronomically so. Angry Birds was originally released for iOS in 2009. In the four years since then, Rovio?s games have been downloaded more than 1.7 billion times across platforms worldwide. To put that number in perspective, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles share a combined worldwide sales total of around 150 million units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II ? the game that broke records late last year by earning $1 billion in 15 days ? has sold around 25 million copies.

The staggering popularity of mobile games scares me sometimes, especially when I consider the prominent freemium model, in which a game is initially free but requires consistent in-game purchases for full content access. ?What is this world coming to?? I ask myself. ?What will become of video games??

But then I think about the current state of video games more broadly. Including the mobile sector, Americans have spent $3.5 billion on video games this year in the first quarter alone. Although that number hasn?t improved from last year?s first quarter, it?s still incredibly, incredibly high. In comparison, the American box office total for films in this year?s first quarter was $2.3 billion.?

I cite all of these numbers to say this: Video games are quickly becoming the most dominant entertainment medium in the world. And, I think, mobile games significantly contribute to that trajectory.?

With the advent of accessible, inexpensive mobile games, people who have never played video games before are playing their little hearts out. My girlfriend?s mom, for instance, has been philosophically against video games her entire life. Last summer, she called in sick to work one day because she?d stayed up all night playing Plants vs. Zombies on her iPad. I haven?t let her live that down since.

On page two: How mobile titles are changing gaming for the better.

Fire rages, Colo. town braces for long evacuation

DEL NORTE, Colo. (AP) ? A colossal wildfire raging near popular tourist areas of the southwestern Colorado mountains more than doubled in size over the weekend, driven by winds and fueled by dead trees in drought-stricken forest, authorities said Sunday.

The weather has prevented fire crews from making progress against the blaze, which Sunday night was estimated at 114 square miles.

No structures have been lost in the fire, and no injuries have been reported.

Sunday, officials said most of the intense fire activity occurred on unburned areas inside the perimeter of what are technically three separate lightning-sparked fires.

But with heavy winds expected again Monday, the perimeter is expected to grow again, said Pete Blume, a commander with the Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Command Team.

Although crews Sunday were able to focus on efforts to protect towns like South Fork, the Wolf Creek ski area and homes along Highway 149, Blume said it doubtful fire fighters will be able to establish any containment lines until there's a break in the hot, dry, windy weather, possibly Tuesday.

They remained optimistic, however, that they can protect South Fork, whose 400 residents and hundreds of summertime visitors were forced to flee on Friday after two of the fires joined and began a fast advance toward the town. The blaze Sunday was two to three miles away, Blume said.

Blume, a commander with the Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Command Team, said the wildfire is the worst ever known to hit the Rio Grande National Forest.

"It's not typical to have these kinds of fires here," said Blume, but beetle kill, the 30 to 40 mile an hour winds and extreme drought are "also not the norm."

Firefighters are hoping for a break in the high winds as well as the anticipated July monsoons to help them fight back the flames. Until then, Blume said, "with that much beetle kill and drought we could have every resource in the country here and still not put in a containment line."

Still, fire officials believe portions of the blaze will likely burn all summer in forested, nonresidential areas, with full extinguishment probably months away.

The lightning-sparked blaze started June 5, but its rapid advance Friday prompted the evacuations.

Residents and tourists were settling in for a long wait before they can return to their homes, cabins and RV parks.

"They just said they had no idea how long it would be before we could be back in South Fork," said Mike Duffy, who owns the South Fork Lodge.

Duffy said he and his wife, Mary, were able to get their personal possessions before fleeing fast-advancing flames that officials initially feared would overtake the town. But with the fire still within three miles of South Fork, they are worried about the long-term impact of a prolong evacuation and news reports about the fire raging around the tourism-dependent town.

Summer visitors include many retirees from Texas and Oklahoma who come to the mountains to flee the heat.

South Fork Mayor Kenneth Brooke estimates that between 1,000 to 1,500 people had to flee, including the summer visitors and permanent residents.

More than 600 firefighters were battling the blaze, and more are coming every day. They also focused on newest arm of the fire as it crept through beetle kill toward the historic mining town of Creede, the last silver boom town in Colorado before the industry went bust in the late 1800s.

Elsewhere in Colorado, about a dozen fires also continued to burn. Firefighters were making progress on a 19-square-mile wildfire near Walsenburg in southern Colorado. The fire was 10 percent contained.

And a wildfire in foothills about 30 miles southwest of Denver was expected to be fully contained Sunday evening. That fire burned 511 acres and forced 100 people to leave their homes.

It'll Take Months to Get a Bride Out of This Lego Wedding Dress

Japanese artist Rie Hosokai, of Daisy Balloon, created this amazing piece of high Lego fashion for Tokyo's "Piece of Peace" charity exhibit at the Parco Museum. Structurally it's simply stunning (albeit a bit Disney Princessy). The construction, contour and shape are based on Hosokai's balloon dress. As an item of haute couture, it's not so utilitarian. But as an avant-garde work-of-Lego-art it's simply stunning.

Shawn Amos: WATCH: Content Shines At Cannes

The big winner at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity? Content.

Agencies, executives and thought leaders from around the world gathered in the French Riviera this week to celebrate the best in advertising and communication, and to honor campaigns that span television, print, radio, social media, mobile and more.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Festival received 35,765 entries from 92 countries. The big winners were campaigns that set aside the hard-sell and focused on bringing thought-provoking and entertaining content to their audiences.

"Dumb Ways To Die," a campaign for Metro Trains in Melbourne, Australia, aimed at promoting rail safety, was the festival's big winner, with 5 total Grand Prix awards - a new record.

Its clever and insanely catchy song topped iTunes charts in several countries, while the accompanying video, depicting cartoon characters dying in, well, dumb ways, has already been seen by more than 50 million people (fair warning: you will not be able to get the tune out of your head). It also featured a mobile game, a book, interactive posters and radio advertising.

The result? Just three months after the launch, Metro saw a 21% reduction in accidents and deaths compared to a year ago, and a million people signed pledges on the website to be safe around trains.

Remember that Dove "Real Beauty" viral video from a few months ago? It was Cannes' Titanium Grand Prix winner. The video featured a sketch artist who drew various women based on their own descriptions, and then based on others' descriptions; the vastly different results hit home with women worldwide.

Another big winner was Toshiba/Intel's "The Beauty Inside," which took home the Grand Prix in the Branded Content and Entertainment category. The six-episode social film featured a main character who woke up as a different person every morning. Topher Grace played the lead, Alex, but the campaign encouraged fans to submit their own video diaries to play the character. It also won an Emmy recently at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

"Branded Content and Entertainment" is a new category, added just last year, and it highlights the importance that content, in all forms, plays in the modern advertising and marketing world. Last year's inaugural winner was Chipotle's emotional "Back to the Start" commercial, which gained national prominence during the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Find out more about the festival in the latest episode of "The Content Brief" from Freshwire below.

Catch up on the video game console wars with last week's episode right here.

Gluten Allergy May Play Role in Gastro Woes in Kids With Autism ...

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) ? In some children with autism, levels of immune system antibodies to gluten proteins are elevated, a new study shows.

The finding may have implications for the cause and treatment of gastrointestinal troubles that often accompany autism spectrum disorders. Diets excluding gluten have become popular in the autism community, but the effectiveness of such diets has not been confirmed.

However, according to the new study, ?there appears to be an increased immune reactivity to gluten in children with autism, which is associated with gastrointestinal symptoms,? said lead researcher Armin Alaedini, an assistant professor of medical sciences at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

The study did not find any link between autism and celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that is triggered by gluten.

Gluten is found in many wheat and related grain products.

In the study, Alaedini?s team reviewed the medical records and blood samples of 140 children, 37 of whom had autism. Researchers tested the blood samples for antibodies to a marker of celiac disease and antibodies to gliadin, a marker of gluten. In addition, patients also were tested for genes associated with celiac disease.

Alaedini stressed that the study is preliminary and ?the increased antibody response to gluten [found among patients] does not necessarily indicate sensitivity to gluten or any disease-causing role for the antibodies in the context of autism.?

Instead, the higher levels of antibodies to gluten could point to immune and/or intestinal abnormalities in the affected children, he said.

More research into the immune response of people with autism to gluten might bring clues to the condition or highlight ?a subset of patients that would respond to certain treatment strategies,? Alaedini said.

Importantly, the findings do not suggest that putting a child with autism on a gluten-free diet has any benefit, he added.

?Such a conclusion cannot be drawn from this particular study,? Alaedini said. ?By itself, the increased antibody response to gluten does not necessarily indicate sensitivity to gluten or any pathogenic [disease-causing] role for the antibodies.?

The report was published in the June online issue of PLoS One.

Another expert agreed that the study findings are preliminary.

?By themselves, anti-gluten antibodies do not mean disease,? explained Dr. Daniel Coury, medical director of Autism Speaks? Autism Treatment Network and chief of developmental & behavioral pediatrics at Nationwide Children?s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

?They are part of the whole puzzle. When they occur with other abnormalities and with symptoms, we begin to get a clearer picture. It may be that this will help identify a subgroup of individuals with autism who may benefit from a specific treatment someday when we have a better understanding of just what is going on here,? Coury said.

Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental & behavioral pediatrics at the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children?s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, added that ?this study could appear like some vindication to the many people who think that gluten is somehow involved in autism and dietary changes might be helpful. But that is not an accurate take-home message,? Adesman said.

?Although increased gluten antibodies are present in children with autism and it appears they are involved in gastrointestinal problems, at this point it?s hard to know what role, if any, these antibodies have in autism,? he said.

Adesman noted that research into gluten-free diets for children with autism hasn?t shown any benefit. ?And this study doesn?t reinforce any basis for dietary intervention for autistic children,? he stressed.

G2Reader

When Google announced it would flip the death switch on Google Reader on July 1, I furiously scoured the RSS feed reader scene to find the best replacement service available. Not long after I landed on G2Reader (free), the search was over. I continued my search, testing several more options, but none ticked all the boxes G2Reader did.

G2Reader is a Web-based RSS feed reader that requires little more than an email and password signup. A big selling point for me is that you can import your Google Reader feeds from the Google Takeout data (for instructions on how to get it, see Get Organized:?Get Off Google Reader). Some other services require you connect them directly to your Google account, which won't work after Google shuts down Reader and didn't necessarily feel very secure to me, especially when an unknown company with no privacy policy or terms of service is behind the app. Maybe that sounds far-fetched, but it was in fact my experience with both Feedly and FeedsBundle.

G2Reader very closely resembles Google Reader in layout and function, although the design is much more stylized than Google Reader's ever was. It's smart and clean, yet simple.

Upon importing data from Google Reader (which you can do via the file called subscriptions.xml that comes in your Google Takeout data), G2Reader keeps all your feed organization intact, so you don't have to muck around moving feeds back into folders and such. G2Reader brought over my Google Alerts, too, and they appear to be updating. That's huge. We'll see if they continue to update correctly after July 1, but for the time being, G2Reader was the only RSS feed reader that correctly imported and implemented my Google Alerts.

One of my favorite features in G2Reader is you can save a list of key words that the app will always highlight for you in the posts that show up in your feed. There's even an API key for your feeds, should you want to do a little programming to extend what your G2Reader feeds can do for you and where you access them.

And, perhaps most impressive of all, G2Reader is available in seven languages: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin (Taiwan/traditional), Russian, Czech, and Slovak. I have friends all over the world who often ask me for software recommendations, and while plenty of them speak and read in English, it's not always their language of choice. Kudos to the tiny G2Reader team for making the app accessible to as many global users as possible.

G2Reader even has some sharing capabilities built in, although not to the extent of The Old Reader, which mimic's Google Reader pre-2011, with the ability to follow other users and be followed in turn. In G2Reader, you can click to open any post to tweet, share on Facebook, or post the link to the post on Google+. If you're looking for real social features, sign up for The Old Reader. It's nearly as impressive as G2Reader in other capacities, too.

There's really only one qualm[a qualm is a doubt the user might have, not a flaw in the app] that might affect whether you think as highly as G2Reader as I do. Updates can lag a little. If you use an RSS reader to monitor breaking news, the latency issue could make G2Reader a no-go. But if, like me, you use it to keep an eye on overall trends or to follow blogs more casually, the speed at which it delivers content isn't a serious issue.

If you're more of a DIY person, definitely explore Commafeed, a source for building your own RSS feed reader that you can host yourself. It's very good, except a little sluggish. We also looked at?TinyTiny RSS, an open-source platform for building your own private RSS feed reader, but found it painfully slow.

G2Reader doesn't have any mobile apps just yet, although according to the team, an Android app is underway. That's a great sign. I'm happy to see a small and dedicated team expanding its service because it gives me hope that other improvements (like speed) could be on the way, too. G2Reader is my new RSS feed reader of choice and an Editors' Choice here at PCMag.

Brazil leaders to meet as protests, violence grow

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Police and protesters fought in the streets into the early hours Friday as an estimated 1 million Brazilians swarmed through more than 80 Brazilian cities in the biggest demonstrations yet against a government viewed as corrupt at all levels and unresponsive to its people.

President Dilma Rousseff called an emergency meeting of her top Cabinet members for Friday morning, more than a week after the protests began. Rousseff, who has a standoffish governing style, has been almost entirely absent from the public eye, making only one statement earlier in the week that peaceful protests are part of the democratic process.

But the protests that raged across Brazil late Thursday and into Friday were spiked with violence as people vented anger over a litany of complaints, from high taxes to corruption to rising prices.

At least one protester was killed in Sao Paulo state when a car rammed into a crowd of demonstrators, after the driver apparently became enraged about being unable to drive along a street.

In Rio de Janeiro, where an estimated 300,000 demonstrators poured into the seaside city's central area, running clashes played out between riot police and clusters of mostly young men with T-shirts wrapped around their faces. But peaceful protesters were caught up in the fray, too, as police fired tear gas canisters into their midst and at times indiscriminately used pepper spray.

Thundering booms echoed off stately colonial buildings as rubber bullets and gas were fired at fleeing crowds.

At least 40 people were injured in Rio, including protesters like Michele Menezes, a wisp of a woman whose youthful face and braces belie her 26 years. Bleeding and with her hair singed from the explosion of a tear gas canister, she said she and others took refuge from the violence in an open bar, only to have a police officer toss the canister inside.

The blast ripped through Menezes' jeans, tearing two coin-sized holes on the back of her thighs, and peppered her upper arm with a rash of small holes.

"I was leaving a peaceful protest and it's not the thugs that attack me but the police themselves," said Menezes, removing her wire-rim glasses to wipe her bloodshot eyes.

She later took refuge in a hotel, along with about two dozen youths, families and others who said they had been repeatedly hit with pepper spray by motorcycle police as they also sheltered inside a bar.

Protesters said they would not back down.

"I saw some pretty scary things, but they're not going to shake me. There's another march on the 22nd and I'm going to be there," said 19-year-old university student Fernanda Szuster.

Asked if her parents knew she was joining in the protests, Szuster said: "They know and they're proud. They also protested when they were young. So they think it's great."

She added, though, that she wouldn't tell her father the details of the police violence. "If he knew, he would never let me leave the house again."

In Brasilia, the national capital, police struggled to keep hundreds of protesters from invading the Foreign Ministry, while the crowd set a small fire outside. Other government buildings were attacked around the city's central esplanade. There, too, police used tear gas and rubber bullets trying to scatter demonstrators.

Clashes were also reported in the Amazon jungle city of Belem, Porto Alegre in the south, the university town Campinas north of Sao Paulo and the northeastern city of Salvador.

"This was meant to be a peaceful demonstration and it is," artist Wanderlei Costa, 33, said in Brasilia. "It's a shame some people cause trouble when there is a much bigger message behind this movement. Brazil needs to change, not only on the government level, but also on the grass-roots level. We have to learn to demonstrate without violence."

The protests took place one week after a violent police crackdown on a much smaller demonstration complaining about an increase in bus and subway fares in Sao Paulo galvanized Brazilians to take their grievances to the streets.

The unrest is hitting the nation as it hosts the Confederations Cup soccer tournament with tens of thousands of foreign visitors in attendance. It also comes one month before Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Brazil, and ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, raising concerns about how Brazilian officials will provide security.

Mass protests have been rare in this country of 190 million people in recent years, and the mushrooming demonstrations of the past week caught Brazilian government officials by surprise while delighting many citizens.

"I think we desperately need this, that we've been needing this for a very, very long time," said Paulo Roberto Rodrigues da Cunha, a 63-year-old clothing store salesman in Rio.

Despite the energy on the street, many protesters said they were unsure how the movement would win real political concessions. People in the protests have held up signs asking for everything from education reforms to free bus fares while denouncing the billions of public dollars spent on stadiums in advance of the World Cup and the Olympics.

"We pay a lot of money in taxes, for electricity, for services, and we want to know where that money is," said Italo Santos, a 25-year old student who joined a rally by 5,000 protesters at Salvador's Campo Grand Square.

But many believe the protests are no longer just about bus fares and have become larger cries for systemic changes.

"This is the start of a structural change in Brazil," said Aline Campos, a 29-year-old publicist in Brasilia. "People now want to make sure their money is well spent, that it's not wasted through corruption."

Chasing After Allosaurus
A little more than a year ago, in the corner of a Salt Lake City tattoo parlor spattered with sci-fi ephemera and fantasy art, I watched as artist Jon McAffee inked an Allosaurus onto my arm. The bloody art was a celebration of a dream realized and a promise to myself.

James Gandolfini leaves behind 2 completed films

NEW YORK (AP) ? James Gandolfini left behind numerous projects in various states of development, including two films that have already completed production.

The 51-year-old actor, who died Wednesday, had been busy, appearing in a flurry of late 2012 releases, including the Osama bin Laden hunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty," the stylish crime saga "Killing Them Softly" and the 1960s coming-of-age drama "Not Fade Away," which reteamed him with "Sopranos" creator David Chase. Gandolfini continued to gravitate toward character actor roles, several of which will now be released posthumously.

The Brooklyn crime film "Animal Rescue," which was shot this spring, was his final movie. Directed by Michael R. Roskam ("Bullhead") and written by Dennis Lehane, it stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, with Gandolfini playing a bar owner. Fox Searchlight is expected to release it next year.

Gandolfini also co-stars in "Enough Said," a romance from writer-director Nicole Holofcener ("Please Give"). He plays ex-husband to Catherine Keener, who is pursued by another divorcee, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Shot last fall, "Enough Said" is also to be distributed by Fox Searchlight, though there is no release date set.

The "Sopranos" star continued to have close associations with HBO. He had shot a pilot for the network with Steven Zaillian ("A Civil Action") for "Criminal Justice," an adaption of the 2008 BBC series in which he plays a low-rent New York City attorney.

Though HBO initially passed on picking up the show, it was restructured for a more limited miniseries run. No episodes beyond the pilot have been shot, so the series' future is now uncertain.

Gandolfini had also recently signed on to reteam with his "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" co-star Steve Carell. In "Bone Wars," a film from HBO Films, the two were to play rival 19th-century paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. That project, though, was only in the early stages of development.

Jeremy Jordan's Followup to 'Smash' Begins Production With Anna Kendrick as Co-Star

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Production on Richard LaGravenese's musical adaptation of "The Last 5 Years," starring Anna Kendrick and "Smash" star Jeremy Jordan, begins this week in New York, Lucky Monkey Pictures and Sh-K-Boom Records said Wednesday.

LaGravenese("Beautiful Creatures") wrote and is directing the adaptation of Jason Robert Brown's musical of the same name, which is a deconstruction of the love affair and marriage of Cathy Hiatt (Kendrick), a struggling actress, and Jamie Wellerstein (Jordan), a rising novelist.

Kendrick, an Oscar-nominated actress known for roles in "Up In the Air," "50/50," and "Pitch Perfect," was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical "High Society."

Before starring in the last season of NBC's "Smash," Jordan made a name for himself on Broadway in productions like "West Side Story," "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Newsies," for which he was nominated for a Tony and a Grammy.

LaGravenese will produce with Lauren Versel, Kurt Deutsch and Janet Brenner, while Steve Norman will co-produce. Steven Meizler is the director of photography for the film, which begins shooting in New York City this week.

CAA will handle domestic sales, with Brian O'Shea and Nat McCormick handling international sales for The Exchange.

"I'm an avid musical theater fan but I never saw the original production. The score is a gold mine of character and insights on relationships. Listening to it, I could only imagine it as a movie," LaGravenese said in a statement.

"For fans, it will be the same musical they know and love, except for minor musical changes made by Jason Robert Brown who I've worked closely with over these eight years. The only major difference is, in the movie, the characters 'Cathy' and 'Jamie' will be singing to each other in songs that were sung directly to the audience on stage."

Effort to protect California egg law in House farm bill fails

A bipartisan group of lawmakers failed to kill a provision in the farm bill that blocks California from requiring that eggs imported into the state come from hens who have enough room to spread their wings.??

The measure in the farm bill now before the House would prohibit one state from imposing conditions on another state?s production of agricultural goods. The prohibition was sought by Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, the biggest egg-producing state, who contends that California has exceeded its authority and interfered with Congress? power to regulate interstate commerce.

A group of lawmakers, led by Rep. Jeff Denham, a Republican from California?s agriculture-producing Central Valley, sought a vote by the full House to remove the prohibition and substitute national standards for hen housing.

But the Republican-led House Rules Committee late Tuesday rejected his request on a largely party-line 7-3 vote.? Committee Chairman Pete Session (R-Texas) said the issue had been considered at length by the House Agriculture Committee.

The decision infuriated Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, who called for defeat of the House farm bill.? Accusing the beef and pork lobbies of working to block a vote on national standards, he wrote on his blog, "Maybe we would listen to these people if cows and pigs laid eggs, but they do not."

National standards for treatment of hens have been endorsed by the industry group United Egg Producers, which contends that it would help farmers deal with a? patchwork of state animal welfare laws. But the idea has drawn opposition from the beef and pork industries and other farm groups, which say it could lead to greater federal regulation of agriculture.

The King prohibition could run into trouble during House-Senate negotiations on a final farm bill.? Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) signed onto a bill by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to establish national standards for the treatment of hens.

Critics of King?s measure have warned that it could nullify more than 150 state laws around the country, many of them dealing with animal welfare. They also say it would hurt California by forcing its egg farmers, but not their out-of-state competitors, to comply with voter-approved rules for more humane treatment of hens.

"Our egg industry could be in a position where we may go out of business,??? Denham warned Wednesday.

California voters in 2008 approved Proposition 2, requiring state chicken farmers to give egg-laying birds enough room to stand and spread their wings. State legislation passed two years later added a requirement that, when the initiative takes effect in 2015, eggs sold in the state come from farms that meet the California standards.?

Obama warns EU over high youth unemployment

BERLIN (AP) -- President Barack Obama raised the prospect Wednesday that Europe might need to adjust its economic policies to tackle high youth unemployment and make sure that some countries don't "lose a generation."

Obama warned during his visit to Berlin that, while he was confident the euro area's leaders will resolve their debt crisis, austerity and structural reforms must not cause policymakers to lose sight of the main goal: Improving people's lives.

Unemployment in the group of 17 European Union countries that use the euro, which is stuck in recession, has shot up to a record 12.2 percent. Youth unemployment in southern Europe's crisis-hit economies, such as Spain and Greece, is now well above 50 percent.

Obama spoke at a news conference alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has championed Europe's focus on budget cuts and structural reforms to tackle the crisis. Some analysts say, however, that the insistence on belt-tightening has worsened the eurozone's recession and that stimulating growth is now needed to overcome the crisis and create new jobs.

"We have to make sure that in pursuit of our longer-term policies, whether it's fiscal consolidation or reforms of our overly rigid labor markets or pension reforms, that we don't lose sight of our main goal, which is to make lives of people better," Obama said.

"And if for example we start seeing youth unemployment go too high, then at some point we've got to modulate our approach to ensure that we don't just lose a generation who may never recover in terms of their careers," he added.

The unemployment rate among those aged 15-24 in the eurozone is 24.4 percent. That compares to 16.1 percent in the U.S, where the age range is 16-24.

Germany itself, Europe's biggest economy, enjoys low unemployment and has avoided recession.

Merkel insisted that her government is committed to help its European partners in the crisis-hit nations.

"Germany on the long run can only do well when Europe does well too," Merkel said. "If we were conducting policies that would harm other countries, we would harm ourselves."

Obama acknowledged that there is no patent solution to fix economic problems, saying the U.S. also has to press ahead with reforms such as improving workers' training, upgrading infrastructure and fostering more investment in research and development.

"I don't think there's a perfect recipe. All of us have to make sure that our budgets aren't out of control, all of us have to undergo structural reforms to adapt to a new and highly competitive economy," he said.

The high unemployment rate is among the most visible fallout of Europe's economic woes, increasingly threatening to undermine young people's faith in their governments and the European Union.

Obama said during a speech later Wednesday: "we want to work with you to make sure that every person can enjoy the dignity that comes from work ? whether they live in Chicago or Cleveland, in Belfast or Berlin, in Athens or Madrid, everybody deserves opportunity."

"We have to have economies that are working for all people, not just those at the very top," he added.

The president also had a half-hour private meeting with Peer Steinbrueck, Merkel's center-left challenger in September national elections.

Steinbrueck told German television after the talks that he and Obama agreed austerity alone cannot solve Europe's problems.

"Of course we must consolidate public budgets, but we need growth initiatives and we have to take care that the other countries again get wind under their wings," Steinbrueck said.

The president of the EU Commission, the bloc's executive arm, acknowledged in Brussels "we have a social emergency in parts of Europe."

Jose Manuel Barroso vowed to use next week's summit of the EU's 27 leaders to push for "concrete measures to fight youth unemployment" and improve corporate lending conditions, especially in southern Europe's crisis-hit economies, to help boost investment and job creation.

The EU, which also includes 10 nations that don't use the euro, has already earmarked some funds for programs tackling youth unemployment.

Germany and France, the bloc's biggest economies, have launched a drive to tackle it, although many details still remain unclear. Merkel will host a meeting on the issue next month of some EU leaders and the bloc's 27 labor ministers.

Confirmed: Court "Oversight" of NSA Surveillance Is a Total Joke

Confirmed: Court "Oversight" of NSA Surveillance Is a Total Joke

Although there's been some debate on the legality of the mounds of data collected by NSA analysts during the PRISM program, House Intelligence Committee officials have confirmed that they're totally free to rifle through your data without a court order. As long as they think they might have a reason to be suspicious?any reason will do!?they're free to go nuts. So if it's not the court, what is essentially backing these thousands of queries to glean data from American citizens? "I've got a good feeling about this one, guys."

And how did what would effectively amount to 5 queries a day manage to get approved so quickly and with so little deliberation? Well, it's probably because no one was reading them:

This news is certainly unsettling in terms of such an unrestricted flow of power, but it's also important to keep in mind that these data queries were, supposedly, not entirely in vain. FBI Deputy Director Sean Joyce told Congress that these same supposed invasions of privacy have stopped at least one subway attack in New York. But that wasn't an isolated incident?NSA surveillance programs were also able to link an American citizen living in Chicago to the terror attacks on Indian hotels in 2008 and to plots to bomb the Danish newspaper that caused controversy by printing a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

And what about the man of the hour, a one Edward Snowden? Well, upon being asked by Congressman Rooney what we can expect of the NSA whistleblower, Deputy Director Joyce responded with one single, loaded, and effectively meaningless word: "Justice."

See that, America? And here you were worrying about a lack of transparency.

You can watch the hearing live for yourself here.
