Conservation Officer Report: Very Good Fishing | Sports & Recreation

The Minnesota DNR provided the following summaries of last week's activity by Minnesota Conservation Officers:

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reports that it has been a very good summer for fishing. Walleyes on the smaller lakes have been a little bigger in size than normal. The designated trout lakes have produced with very few people fishing the remote lakes. Pretty easy to find lakes to have all to yourself without even going in the BWCA. The CO assisted the sheriff?s department with a call. He also followed up on another incident involving a state park ranger.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) patrolled inland lakes and Lake Superior accesses. One campsite checked had garbage burning in the fire pit, trash on the site, and an untagged minnow trap in infested waters. A couple reports of nuisance bear complaints were also received involving a sow and cubs; most reports have slowed due to the bumper berry crop. The officer also handled an unpermitted fire complaint and checked state park and kayak campsites.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) checked anglers on Lake Superior during Fisherman?s Picnic. The salmon bit was on while Lakers were a little harder to find. Wahlstrom spent time checking problem ORV areas in the Finland and Tofte area. Anglers were checked on remote area lakes where some people tried their luck with extra lines. Enforcement action was taken for ATV, OHM, watercraft registration and fishing violations.

Water Resource Enforcement Officer Mike Scott investigated several Wetland Conservation Act violations and two Restoration Orders were issued for repairing the damage to wetlands. A public waters violation in the Ely area is being worked on with DNR Waters folks and Lake County Planning and Zoning. Officer Scott worked at an Aquatic Invasive Species booth at Fisherman?s Picnic in Grand Marais on Friday. The booth was sponsored by Minn. Sea Grant and information was exchanged with the public reference AIS issues and concerns.

Sgt. Keith Olson (Lake Superior Marine Unit) reports that anglers and boaters were checked on Lake Superior and the Duluth Harbor. Bayfront Festival Park had several bands on stage over the course of the weekend. Boaters anchor to enjoy the entertainment. The weather produced some thunderstorms; however, most boaters stayed on the water. A reminder to shore anglers that fish are currently being stocked in the Duluth area and that fish reduced to your bag must meet the length requirements.

CO Matt Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked anglers and boaters on Lake Superior.? A detail was worked along the upper part of the shore focusing on salmon anglers and recreational boating during Fisherman?s Picnic in Grand Marais. A charter captain was found to be running his business without the required licensure and is facing criminal charges and equipment forfeiture. Nice weather brought quite a few boats to the Duluth Harbor for weekend concerts. Enforcement action taken for angling, OHM, ATV, and commercial violations.

CO Troy Ter Meer (Lake Superior Marine Unit) assisted in the investigation of a fishing guide on Lake Superior who did not have the required licenses. He was cited for guiding without a Lake Superior Guide License. He prepared confiscated and incidental furs to be turned over to MTA for the tanned fur project.? He attended the National Trappers Association Conference sponsored by the Minn. Trappers Association and staffed the TIP trailer answering questions. He also checked boaters and anglers in the Duluth area.? Enforcement action taken for angling and commercial violations.

CO John Velsvaag (Ely) checked anglers and boaters this past week and saw some nice fish. CO Velsvaag observed that the tullibee die off is still happening on Shagawa Lake. CO Velsvaag took several phone calls about bears in the area and an ATV complaint in Ely.

CO Marty Stage (Ely) enforced ATV and canoe registration laws. Two TIP complaints came in concerning fishing violations that were dealt with. Officer Stage observed what seemed to be a slightly lower number of unregistered canoes heading into the BWCAW and the whole area was a little quieter after the big festival last week. More deer have been crossing the roads in recent nights, so learn to watch and be ready for the ones that you don't see.
